Welcome to Saunders Brothers Farm Market

Saunders Brothers is a family owned business that is nestled on the sunrise side of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County, VA. The business was started in 1915 by five brothers who raised rabbits, tobacco, and apples through tough times like the Great Depression. Rabbits and tobacco are no longer in the product mix – in their place, second generation Paul Saunders added boxwood to the inventory in the 1950’s and now they are the company’s specialty. Today, the company is owned and operated by third and fourth generation members of the Saunders family. As in 1915, peaches and apples still fill the mountainside orchards, but they are now accompanied by acres of field-grown boxwood and a broad range of woody and herbaceous crops, grown in the more than 400 greenhouses on site.

What began as a two-year project to document a life's worth of stories, turned into a work that's taken seven years to complete. The book, which chronicles Nelson County, VA history from the Civil War through the devastation of Hurricane Camille, includes diaries, letters, and interviews with dozens of citizens who saw history happen firsthand.

It is over 600 pages long, and contains over 1200 photographs.
